Does Wallpaper Paint a Pretty Picture?

Wallpaper of a Kitchen

This wallpaper is being used in a country-style kitchen. It likely reflects the personality of the homeowner.

When it comes to decorating walls, many homeowners tackle the choice of wallpaper vs. paint. The benefits of wallpaper include its durability and variety of styles and textures that allow it to set a mood or tell a story. Often, the right wallpaper can provide a room character that exhibits the homeowner’s own personality, making it a viable wall-decorating choice. After all, everyone wants to feel “at home” in his or her own house.

Unfortunately, the exact features of wallpaper that make one’s house a home can become a liability when selling that home.

Wallpaper often reflects a specific style of décor, and styles considered modern or contemporary change over time. For example, many recognize wallpaper with sharp, geometric shapes as reflecting today’s contemporary or modern style. However, today’s modern and contemporary style may not be tomorrow’s. Because wallpaper’s durability enables it to last many years, a room can eventually appear “dated” when it reflects the modern or contemporary style of a past era.

When selling your house, it is important to allow each potential buyer to envision the telling of his/her own story in your space. Wallpaper reflecting a specific taste can make this more difficult, resulting in a more limited pool of interested buyers. Moreover, buyers looking for a “move-in ready” home may immediately eliminate yours as a candidate after considering the work and expense required to remove it.

Everyone should feel “at home” in his or her own house. The use of wallpaper can enhance that experience. However, if sustaining the marketability of your house is a high priority, choosing neutral-colored paint for your walls always provides the best option.
